We Don’t Hide What’s In It. Here’s Every Ingredient and Why It’s There.
Most soap companies bury their ingredient list in fine print nobody reads. We put ours front and centre — because every single thing in a Grindstone bar is there for a reason. No filler. No synthetic fragrance. No mystery chemicals designed to make your hands smell like a hotel lobby.
Here’s exactly what goes into GRIT and POLISH, and what each ingredient does for the guy who actually works for a living.
Grindstone GRIT — Heavy Duty Bar Soap
Activated Charcoal
The workhorse of the formula. Activated charcoal has been used in industrial and medical cleaning for decades — and for good reason. Its porous structure acts like a magnet for oil, grease, and impurities, drawing them out of your pores at a microscopic level rather than just pushing them around on the surface. Regular soap cleans what it can reach. Activated charcoal goes deeper. After a shift covered in diesel, grease, or grime, this is the ingredient doing the real heavy lifting.
Ground Pumice
This is where GRIT earns its name. Pumice is volcanic rock — the same material used in industrial abrasives — ground into a fine powder and worked directly into the bar. It physically scrubs grease, calluses, paint residue, and job-site grime off your hands in a way that no amount of lathering with regular soap can match. Mechanics have been reaching for pumice-based cleaners for generations. We just put it in a bar that doesn’t look like it came from a gas station shelf.
Pimpinella Anisum (Anise) Seed Extract
Don’t let the Latin fool you — anise seed extract is a natural antibacterial and antifungal agent that helps keep hands clean beyond just the surface wash. It also carries a sharp, earthy scent that complements the orange peel oil without being sweet or floral. This is what makes GRIT smell like a clean shop, not a candle store.
Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil
Fresh orange peel oil cuts through residual odour and adds a clean citrus note that balances the anise without going anywhere near “spa territory.” Orange peel oil is also a natural solvent — it helps break down oil-based grime on contact, working alongside the pumice to give you a thorough clean that lasts.
Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil
The backbone of the lather. Coconut oil produces the rich, dense foam that carries the activated charcoal and pumice across your hands and gets them into every crack, crevice, and callus. Without a solid lather, your cleaning ingredients can't do their job — coconut oil makes sure they get where they need to go.
Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil
The conditioner. After pumice has done its job scrubbing, your hands need something that won't leave them dry and cracked. Olive oil is one of the oldest and most effective skin conditioners on earth — it penetrates deep into the skin to restore moisture and protect the skin barrier.
Tradespeople's hands take a beating every day.
Olive oil makes sure GRIT cleans hard without leaving your hands feeling like sandpaper.
Aqua & Sodium Hydroxide (Lye)
These are the chemistry that makes soap, soap. Sodium hydroxide (lye) reacts with the oils in the formula through a process called saponification — turning raw oils into the cleansing bar in your hand. By the time the bar is fully cured, there is zero active lye remaining in the product. It’s entirely safe, and it’s in every bar of soap ever made — anyone who says their soap is “lye-free” is either selling you liquid detergent or not telling the truth.
Grindstone POLISH — Daily Bar Soap
Everything in GRIT that cleans and conditions is in POLISH too — coconut oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, activated charcoal, aqua, and sodium hydroxide. POLISH is built on the same foundation with one important difference: it’s formulated for daily use, with a gentler touch and two additional ingredients chosen specifically for everyday performance.
Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil
Castor oil is the secret weapon behind POLISH’s exceptionally rich lather. It boosts and stabilises foam better than almost any other natural oil — meaning POLISH produces a thick, creamy lather that feels luxurious without being precious. For a bar you’re using every single day, the quality of the lather matters. Castor oil makes sure every wash feels like it’s actually working.
Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil
Before you scroll past — hear us out. Lavender oil in POLISH isn’t there to make your bathroom smell like a spa. It’s there because it’s one of the most effective natural antiseptics and skin-calming agents available. For guys who wash their hands multiple times a day — mechanics, drivers, tradespeople — repeated washing can cause redness, irritation, and dryness. Lavender oil calms that inflammation, kills bacteria on contact, and helps maintain your skin’s natural barrier so daily washing doesn’t wreck your hands over time. It’s also naturally sleep-supporting — making POLISH the perfect end-of-day bar when you finally clock out.
Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil
Tea tree oil is the heavy-duty antiseptic that keeps POLISH firmly in blue-collar territory. With proven antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties, tea tree oil ensures that POLISH isn’t just cleaning the surface — it’s keeping hands genuinely hygienic between heavy-duty GRIT washes. Tea tree has been used in industrial and medical settings for decades. It’s not trendy. It works.
The Bottom Line
Every ingredient in Grindstone GRIT and POLISH was chosen because it does a specific job for hands that work for a living. No filler. No synthetic fragrance. No ingredients we can’t explain in plain English.
This isn’t soap made for someone who’s worried about their pores. This is soap made for the guy who’s worried about getting the grease off his hands before dinner — and making sure they don’t crack and bleed by Friday.
That’s what goes into Grindstone. That’s what comes out the other side.
