Frequently Asked Questions

The Products

What's the difference between GRIT and POLISH?
GRIT is your heavy-duty end-of-shift bar — activated charcoal draws out oil and impurities at the pore level, and ground pumice physically scrubs grease, grime, and job-site residue off your hands. It's built for when regular soap taps out halfway through the job.

POLISH is your daily bar — same activated charcoal foundation, gentler formula for everyday use. Tea tree keeps things fresh and antiseptic, lavender takes the edge off after a long shift. Gentle enough for every day. Still built by Grindstone.

Simple version: GRIT for the serious damage, POLISH for everything else.

What's in Grindstone GRIT?
Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Canola Oil, Aqua, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Activated Charcoal, Pimpinella Anisum (Anise) Seed Extract, Ground Pumice, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil.

No synthetic fragrance. No filler. Every ingredient is there for a reason.

What's in Grindstone POLISH?
Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Aqua, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Canola Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Activated Charcoal, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil.

No synthetic fragrance. No filler. Every ingredient is there for a reason.

Is Grindstone vegan?
Yes — both GRIT and POLISH are 100% vegan. No animal-derived ingredients.

Are Grindstone bars safe for sensitive skin?
POLISH is formulated for daily use and is generally well-tolerated. GRIT contains ground pumice which is a physical exfoliant — if you have very sensitive skin we'd recommend starting with POLISH. If you have a known allergy to any listed ingredient, check the full ingredient list before purchasing.

How long does a bar last?
Approximately 3-4 weeks with daily use. To extend the life of your bar — keep it on a draining soap dish between uses and don't let it sit in standing water. Cold process bars last significantly longer when kept dry.

What does GRIT smell like?
Anise and orange peel — earthy, sharp, and clean. Not sweet. Not floral. Smells like a man who just got something done.

What does POLISH smell like?
Lavender and tea tree — clean, fresh, and functional. The lavender isn't spa-lavender, it's the kind of clean scent that makes sense at the end of a real day.

Where is Grindstone made?
Handcrafted in Northern Ontario, Canada by a small-batch Canadian soap maker. Made in Canada is on the label because it's true — not because it's a marketing line.

The Brand

Who started Grindstone?
Three brothers from St. Catharines, Ontario — Logan, Marcus, and Lucus Connolly. Logan spent years driving long haul, doing heavy towing, and working in a transport truck scrap yard. He built Grindstone because no soap on the market was built for what he actually does every day. Read the full story on our About Us page.

Why activated charcoal?
Activated charcoal is porous at a microscopic level — it acts like a magnet for oil, grease, and impurities, drawing them out of your pores rather than just pushing them around on the surface. It's been used in industrial and medical cleaning for decades. It works.

Why pumice?
Ground pumice is volcanic rock — the same material used in industrial abrasives — fine enough to work into a bar of soap but gritty enough to physically scrub grease and grime off your hands. Mechanics have reached for pumice-based cleaners for generations. We just made a bar worthy of the guy using it.

Is Grindstone affiliated with any other brands?
No. Grindstone Supply Co. is an independent, Canadian-owned brand. We're not affiliated with any other soap company, wellness brand, or personal care manufacturer.
